Steps

  • 1

    How to build it:

    CREATING THE FRAME

Use the hand punch to create a hole through the middle of a straw.

  • 1

Ask mom or dad to use the scissors to widen the hole so that you can slide another straw through it to make the cross section of the kite.

  • 1

Insert straws into the top of the vertical piece by pushing one inside the other until it measures 25.5 cm from the middle of the cross. Cut straw piece(s) as needed to fit the measurement.

  • 1

Insert straws into the bottom of the vertical piece until it measures 38 cm from the middle.

  • 1

Insert straws into the left and right sides of the horizontal straw until each side measures 20 cm from the middle.

  • 1

Secure each straw joint by wrapping tape around it.

  • 1

Punch a hole through the sides of each end straw, about 1 cm from the ends.

  • 1

Starting at the top of the frame, thread the short kite string evenly through the holes on each side of the frame.

  • 1

Pull the kite string to make sure that it’s tight and tie a double knot at the bottom where the two sides of the frame meet. Do not cut the excess string below the knot.

  • 1

    CREATING THE BODY

Lay the tissue paper on the ground. Place the wax paper on top, and place the frame on top of that too.

  • 1

Use a ruler to draw a 2.5 cm seam allowance around the entire frame.

  • 1

Remove the frame and follow the lines to cut the kite shape out of both papers. Make sure you get mom or dad’s help with the scissors.

  • 1

Tape the frame to the wax paper at each straw joint.

  • 1

Pick up the wax paper with the frame attached, turn it over and run the glue stick along the edges of the paper.

  • 1

Place the wax paper and frame back on top of the tissue paper and press the edges down.

  • 1

Fold each side of the kite over the frame and seal with tape.

  • 1

    ATTACH STRING AND TAIL

Punch holes through the sides of the straws at each end, approximately 5 cm in.

  • 1

Thread 60 cm of the short kite string through the top and bottom holes. Tie at both ends, allowing for slack.

  • 1

Thread 40 cm of the short kite string through the left and right holes. Tie the horizontal string at both ends, again allowing for slack.

  • 1

Lift both strings at the point of intersection and tie one end of the long kite string in the middle to create a triangle.

  • 1

Tape the other end of the long kite string to the center of the pencil and wrap the string around it several times.

  • 1

Poke the pencil through the center of the cover and base of the La Vache Qui Rit pack, then slide those onto either end of the pencil to secure the long kite string on it.

  • 1

Print out your favorite Sky Racers characters, cut them out and tape them to the tail so that they can fly with your kite!

  • 1

Tie some blue ribbons to the excess kite string at the bottom of the frame to create a tail.

  • 1

Finally, write your name on the kite, and decorate it with fun drawings of stars, clouds, or whatever your like! You can even decorate your kite with the stickers from your La Vache qui rit pack!

You’re done! Enjoy flying this beauty and happy crafting!
